Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Rules

BARUM JIU-JITSU operates on a single elimination system, which adheres to the official International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation rules (BJJ Rules). Please visit the following website for more information on the rules (www.ibjjf.org).

BARUM JIU-JITSU SAN DIEGO operates under the rules and guidelines of the IBJJF rules document.

Any rule that is not explicitly mentioned on our web site and / or documentation is to be covered by the rules outlined in the IBJJF rules document.

INTERNATIONAL BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU FEDERATION

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU RULES +

A competitor can win a match by submission, points, advantage or referee’s decision.

SCORING SYSTEM

  • Throws and/or takedowns – 2 POINTS
  • Knee on belly – 2 POINTS
  • Changing position (Guard or Half-Guard to top) – Sweep – 2 POINTS
  • Passing the guard – 3 POINTS
  • Top mount position – 4 POINTS
  • Control from the back (Back mount and/or Back Grab) – 4 POINTS

Advantage is determined by submission attempts, takedown attempts and superior positioning (arm around the head).

ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES IN ALL DIVISIONS

1. NO heel hooks or twisting knee locks of any kind

2. NO striking of any kind

3. NO biting, hair pulling or eye-gauging

4. NO slamming of any kind

5. NO cervical neck cranks of any kind

COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF LEGAL AND ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES BY AGE AND BELT LEVEL

JUVENILE

Including White and Blue belts (ages 16 to 17) and Adult through Senior White Belts.

Straight Ankle Locks are Permitted in these divisions.

1. NO slamming from the guard

2. NO cervical neck cranks

3. NO scissor takedowns

4. NO heel hooks or other twisting knee locks

5. NO biceps locks (i.e., bicep slicers)

6. NO calf locks (i.e., knee spreaders)

7. NO knee bars

8. NO mata leão with foot (i.e., figure-for toe-holds)

9. NO wrist locks

ADULT

Through Senior Blue & Purple Belts

Wrist Locks Permitted for Adult Blue Belt and Up Only.

1. NO slamming from the guard

2. NO cervical neck cranks

3. NO scissor takedowns

4. NO heel hooks or other twisting knee locks

5. NO biceps locks (i.e., bicep slicers)

6. NO calf locks (i.e., knee spreaders)

7. NO knee bars

8. NO mata leao with foot (i.e., figure-four toe-holds)

ADULT

Through Senior Brown & Black Belts

Knee Locks, Biceps Locks, Calf Locks, Knee Bars, and Mata Leao with the Foot are legal in these divisions.

1. NO slamming from the guard

2. NO cervical neck cranks

3. NO scissor takedowns

4. NO heel hooks

PLEASE NOTE

1. Weigh-ins will take place on the check in area before each

competitor’s first match. Each competitor gets only one

opportunity to weigh-in, so please make sure you have

signed up for the right division, or risk disqualification.

2. Any athlete who fails to appear when called to compete will

forfeit the match.

3. Any competitor running from a fight will be docked one

point. If the behavior continues, he or she may be

disqualified.

4. Any competitor attempting to escape a submission by going

out-of-bounds will be disqualified.

5. No refunds.

The promoters are not liable for any injury and / or accident involving the competitors. The event is properly insured. Medical staff will be on the premises to provide First-Aid as needed.
